Depression: The news isn’t depressing

Depression is a constant feeling of hopelessness, sadness and loss of interest which stops you from doing your normal activities. In a world often overshadowed by the gloom of depression, a ray of hope emerges, offering solace and comfort from unexpected places.

People who are facing such situations can seek help and comfort from God. “Give all your worries and cares to God for He cares for you” says in 1 Peter 5:7. And in Jeremiah 29:11-12, the Bible says “For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and hope”. God has a special plan for your life, even if you can’t see it right now. He wants you to use your gifts and talents to make a difference in the world.

Jeremiah writes in the Bible that he has cried so much that there’s nothing left to come out. Sound familiar? You may relate to Jeremiah if you’ve ever thought, “I’ve cried so much that I’ve run out of tears…I feel so heartbroken.”

The Bible is not full of men and women who are immune or unaware of what it’s like to experience sorrow and pain. God included and made sure that these true stories were included in the Bible, partly so that you would know you’re not alone. Depression can happen to anyone. It is a temporary condition that you can overcome with God’s help. Philippians 4:13 says: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

God doesn’t want you to experience depression, but He understands what you’re experiencing. He is merciful, gracious, and empathizes with what you’re going through (Hebrews 4:14-16). In a world often pulled down by the weight of despair, this news flips the script on depression, presenting a narrative of hope. As individuals struggle with their mental health, there is hope and happiness in God. Rely only on Jesus Christ, as we have hope through Him for a better future.

If you or a loved one is struggling with suicidal thoughts and tendencies, please don’t be ashamed to get medical help. Don’t try to face this on your own. There is hope and healing, and there are many who will journey through this trial with you.
