Imagine you have a favorite food. Every time you enjoy this food, your brain releases a chemical called dopamine, which makes you feel good and motivated. But what if you started eating that food all the time, even when you’re not hungry, neglecting other meals and activities you used to enjoy? There are certain substances or behaviors that give you such a quick rush of pleasure, or even help you escape from stress. The more you use it, the more your brain adapts and craves that dopamine hit, leading to a compulsive behavior which is called addiction.

Struggling with addiction can be a lonely and isolating experience. Whether you’re battling addiction to pornography, alcohol, drugs, social media or anything else, the chains of addiction can feel heavy and unbreakable. People with addiction feel compelled to engage in the addictive behavior or use the substances, even when they want to stop. It feels like a powerful urge that is difficult to resist. But there is hope in breaking free from the chains by which you are crushed.
The Holy Bible teaches that we are all sinners and that none of us are perfect. Romans 3:23 tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This means that you are not alone in your struggle, and that God’s love and forgiveness extend to you even amid your addiction.
The good news of the Gospel is that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. Romans 5:8 says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This means that your addiction does not define you, and that you are forgiven and redeemed through the blood of Jesus.
The Holy Bible offers the promise of a new life in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” This means that your addiction does not have to control you anymore. Through faith in Jesus, you can receive the power to break free from its grip and live a transformed life. If you would let God transform your life, this is His promise to you in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Most importantly, remember that God loves you and wants to help you. You may turn to him in prayer, seek his guidance, and trust in his power to transform your life.
